Buying Refurbished Laptop ComputersMy favorite thing to do, no matter what I'm purchasing, is to look at refurbished laptop computers. Refurbished means that there was something wrong with it, it was sent back, it was repaired and it was sent back out with a full warranty on it. Why is that a good deal? Doesn't it mean you're getting someone else's problem? No, it doesn't mean that at all. They design a cheap laptop computer to be modular; after all, a computer that is modular can be fixed quickly. The truth is, even if you were to buy one of the top-of-the-line laptops such as an apple or a gateway¡ they, also, are modular. When electronics go, they tend to go within the first couple months. The reason for that is, electronic circuits either have a problem during the first few hours of use (it's called burn-in time) or they tend never to have a problem. So, refurbished laptop computers have the same chance as any new laptop might of working right-out-of-the-box. The more complex that the microprocessor has gotten, the more possibility that something will go wrong in the first few week (or right as you take it out and try it out).
Generally, the reason a laptop is sent back is because a pixel-or-two is missing. They'll throw in a new LCD monitor, they wipe it down and send it back off. Since refurbished laptop computers have a brand-new warranty, its as good as having a new computer. It has the same chance of dying as any computer might. So, as far as I'm concerned, one of the best laptop computer deals that you can get is buy a refurbished computer. You have far more problems if you try to go the used laptop computer route. When they sell a laptop, used, there are usually a few reasons. Either they've had it five years and now it's pretty-much worthless because the battery doesn't charge up any more so you get less than an hours worth of work out of the laptop¡ or it doesn't have the installation disks any more and it's gotten a virus, or Adware, or some DLL is missing, so they say, "I've had it with this, let me just buy another one." But, they don't' offer it for sale much less than the new laptops are being sold for. So, used computers aren't a good deal. Not only don't you get a warranty; but they generally aren't any cheaper than refurbished laptop computers would be. What with the economy, and all, even new computers are very low-priced, though. Because people paid $1000 - $3000 for a laptop a few years ago, they think they should still get at least half of that price even now. Thus, the price that they offer a used computer can sometimes be even more than you'd pay for a comparable computer. So, you can buy a laptop, new, for a good price; but you can also get the same computer with the same warranty, and have the same possibility that it might break for less money. So, why would you buy a new one if you could buy refurbished laptop computers. |
